Anatomically engineered and profiled specifically for youth and younger riders, the all-new Alpinestars SM3 Youth Fray Helmet is optimized for MX, Enduro and off-road use. Packed with technologies and innovations drawn from Alpinestars' range of adult helmets, it delivers an optimal blend of performance, protection and comfort tailored to young riders.
The lightweight outer shell is constructed from a technologically advanced, impact-resistant thermoplastic using a special polymer blend enhanced by varying degrees of thickness — engineered for the ideal combination of impact protection and low weight. The shell is available in three sizes: Youth Small, Youth Medium and Youth Large. The SM3 Youth weighs 1060g (ECE) and 1170g (DOT), with separate shell versions produced to meet DOT and ECE requirements. The DOT-certified version features a composite fiber layer assembled between the outer shell and the EPS liner for maximum impact protection.
A multiple-density inner liner places the correct EPS density in the correct area for enhanced impact absorption while helping reduce overall weight. Alpinestars' patented low-friction coating is applied to the inner surface of the main EPS liner, reducing rotational acceleration forces from oblique impacts by acting as a slip plane — mimicking the brain's own cerebrospinal fluid, the body's natural defense against oblique impacts. The inner and outer surfaces are also engineered to minimize the effects of oblique impacts.
Fit can be tailored to the rider's head via crown and cheek pads, which are available as genuine spare parts in different thicknesses. Youth Medium and Youth Large sizes share the same EPS size, allowing a rider who starts in a YM to configure the helmet to a Youth Large size as they grow using crown and cheek pad spare parts. The Youth Small features a smaller EPS size and can be customized via the cheek pads only. Alpinestars' research indicates that riders in a YS size are typically 3 to 4 years old and require a dedicated helmet fit.
Alpinestars has introduced a new in-house chin-bar standard for the SM3 Youth, testing to conditions heavier than homologation requirements. To meet this standard, the shell thickness and helmet structure on the chin area have been optimized for superior impact performance.
